Gridley Telephone Company History

Telephone service in the Gridley area began in the 19th century with a few poorly constructed lines operated by different groups. One of the companies established around 1900, run by M.J. Wald, Ward Hiserodt, and C.M. Coyle, played a significant role in establishing a reliable telephone system. Hiserodt, along with Will Shanebrook and Blaine Tarman, started installing telephone lines in Gridley in February 1900. The telephone system, which started operating in the summer of 1900, was one of the earliest dial exchanges in central Illinois.
However, the telephone service was interrupted in May 1901 due to a fire that destroyed the entire business district, including the telephone company’s switch and building. Despite this setback, a new switchboard was installed, and most of the local telephone companies and cooperatives in the area were consolidated by July 1903.
Ownership of the telephone company changed over the years, leading to the formation of Gridley Telephone Co. in April 1913 and its subsequent incorporation in 1920. The company continued to evolve, facing challenges such as competition and a sleet storm that caused extensive damage to the telephone lines.
The company made several advancements, including the installation of a new common battery switchboard in 1946, which improved access for subscribers. The rural farmer lines had multiple-party service, and the local grocer used coded ringing to communicate specials and news to the community.
In 1970, ownership of the company changed again, and a complete system rebuild began in 1971, modernizing the infrastructure and services provided. The company continued to evolve, embracing new technologies such as digital computers and expanding its range of products and services.
Today, Gridley Telephone, as part of Egyptian Communication Services, offers a wide range of telecommunications products and services, including High-Speed Internet Access and Long-Distance service, while remaining committed to serving the community.
